Budgam, Feb 26 (KNO): Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLA from Budgam, Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, on Thursday said he will write to the Union Civil Aviation Ministry seeking reconsideration of the official naming of Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport.
Addressing a press conference at the party office here, Mehdi, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that although the airport was named after the revered Sufi saint Sheikh-ul-Aalam in 2012, the name is not being officially reflected in common usage, where it continues to be referred to as Srinagar International Airport.
He said that the airport falls within the territorial jurisdiction of Budgam district and argued that continuing to associate it solely with Srinagar overlooks Budgam’s geographical and administrative claim. He termed the issue a matter of recognition and representation for the district.
The MLA also raised concerns regarding what he described as a pattern of under-recognition of Budgam in key sectors. He cited the example of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), located in the district, which is commonly referred to as NIFT Srinagar.
Mehdi said he will formally approach the Civil Aviation Ministry and other concerned authorities to seek clarity and necessary action on the matter—(KNO)
